I’m not gonna lie — we’re not avid fishermen…yet. Even though our son often took lake fishing breaks with friends through high school, surf fishing is a new-to-us activity that beach-living in Brigantine has allowed us to enjoy. Because of this, feedback from a guest of Legacy Brigantine who reported that her son said the fishermen on our beach, “…were the nicest he’s ever encountered,” and my husband’s occasional surf fishing trips with a friend….I decided to do a bit of research into — why fish?? The following are three simple reasons:
Fishing promotes RELAXATION
As far I know, there’s no such thing as indoor fishing. As an outdoor sport, fishing requires time spent in nature, and if you’re surf fishing — with nothing but ocean before you. Did you know that time spent in nature actually provides the same benefits that meditation offers your body? Though some discredit it as passive and boring, fishing helps reduce blood pressure, relax your body, and, therefore contributes to good health.
Fishing DECREASES ANXIETY
The thing about fishing is that it requires an extended investment of time. A fisherman must choose to practice patience while he waits for the tug on his line and can, then, reel-in his catch. This chosen practice of patience and the need to focus on fishing in order to avoid missing the catch, actually helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Fishing is plain FUN!
Even though fishing is a laid-back sport, the alternation of tending to a rod(s) and sitting along the shore or in a boat in anticipation of a catch is both thrilling and challenging. And if your catch is a big one, you might be in for a fight with your fish while reeling it in! Fishing is a sport that can be enjoyed alone, with friends or family — whichever is most enjoyable to you.
Brigantine is one of the hottest fishing spots along the Jersey Shore*. You’ll find Flounder, Striped Bass and King Fish in our waters. Since the season for Stripers in New Jersey runs from March 1st thru December 31st, there is still plenty of time to enjoy this great sport. This has never been more true than this year! According to Jim Hutchinson of The Fisherman Magazine (www.thefisherman.com) on October 13, 2022, thanks to conditions created by Hurricane Fiona and followed by Hurricane Ian, “Last weekend things exploded on the Striper front…quite possibly the greatest sustained, multi-run of jumbo Striped Bass by beach and boat at the Jersey Shore in the past 40 years.”
