Renting out or renting from a property other than a hotel, motel, or bed & breakfast has most often been identified with one of the first online venues that connects home owners and guests for home-away-from-home stays and experiences — AirBnB”ing”.  In truth, this part of the hospitality industry is officially named Short Term Rentals (STR).  Knowing this makes it easier to understand that finding a vacation rental property and having a great experience through the process to and during your stay doesn’t require AirBnB, VRBO, Furnish Finder, etc to be the go-between.  It is possible, and beneficial, to book your choice of a vacation rental property directly through the property owner.

The real question becomes, why book an STR property directly?  What benefits do guests gain in choosing this option?  The fact is that there are benefits to booking directly to both guests and hosts.  In fact, the benefits are the same…these work both ways:

1. Get to know the property owner better and directly.

2. An owner who is willing to book directly is most-often more involved with the process and, therefore, takes good care of their property and their guests.

3. You’ll save hundreds of dollars…no exaggeration. (See below)

Here is an example of the breakdown in cost of a (real) 3rd-party site reservation…

• Lodging for 5 nights: $1,482.00

• Cleaning Fee: $150.00

• Guest Service Fee: $233.93

• Occupancy Taxes:             $192.63

• TOTAL expense for this guest = $2,083.56

And because, as hosts, we are charged a Host Service Fee, that savings gets passed on to you, too!!

This same reservation via direct-booking would’ve been…

• Lodging for 5 nights: $1,375.00

• Cleaning Fee: $150.00

• Damage Protect. Ins. Fee: $100.00

• TOTAL expense for this guest = $1,725.00

Direct-booking would’ve saved this guest $358.56 — that’s more than the cost of a 6th night’s stay!!!
